Blessing of Law or Blessing of Grace: Which Do You Choose?

Ps. Shinoj Joseph John 1:16-18

Blessing of Law or Blessing of Grace: Which Do You Choose?
"And of His fullness we have all received, grace for grace." (John 1:16)

There are two blessings:

  1. The blessing from the law of Moses (OT)
  2. The blessing through Jesus Christ

1. The Blessing from the Law of Moses (OT)

Looking at verse 17, we first see the blessing from the law. In Leviticus 9:23, Moses and Aaron blessed the people as they came out of the tent of meeting. God confirmed and rewarded this with fire from heaven. For that blessing, three offerings were made.

Blessings are not easy.

Before a blessing there must be:

  1. Sin offering
  2. Burnt offering
  3. Peace offering

Before any blessing there is an offering. Behind an offering, a sacrifice, there is blood and giving. These sacrifices must be done in the way the Lord has mentioned, and for blessing there is no point in imitation.

What is the real secret behind our blessing?

In Leviticus 10:1, Aaron's children tried to imitate it. If you look at the OT or the NT, blessing doesn't come if we try to imitate someone.

It must come from our heart and as appointed.

We don't see blessings because we are trying to imitate our forefathers. It must come from their own heart and be seen through their personal experience.

  • We cannot be a child of God out of imitation.
  • We cannot get to our blessing through shortcuts. It must be through the proper route.

And the blessing of the law under the OT had an expiry period. It was only for one year, and that too under the exact conditions.

2. The Blessing through Jesus Christ

Because of the fullness in Christ, I got grace for grace. Two things come with Him:

Grace and Truth

Truth can be connected only to truth. If something has to come from truth, it can only be another truth. This truth has power over and above to bless without limit.

But we cannot go to Him with adjustment. We have to go to Him with truth. We cannot enter through shortcuts, but only in truth. Our only way to enter the truth is to be part of the truth, and this is by being His child.

The moment I am born again, I am naturally entitled to the inheritance.

And we are entitled to this inheritance because of the fullness of Jesus Christ.

How? Verse 12 tells us:

Being born of God, by faith.

Entering into sonship or daughtership of God is by faith. Just like how Jesus was born, when the Holy Spirit came upon Mary, similarly when we believe in Jesus Christ, the same Holy Spirit will come upon us. Thus we become born of God.

Our Challenge: Wanting Something Visible

Some may say we only need the blessing of Moses, because there were so many visible things happening at that time. But in the NT, there is nothing visible.

This is our challenge. We want something visible, but here there is only faith.

There is nothing that would connect to our knowledge. All we have to do is:

  • Accept the will of God
  • Believe, and the Holy Spirit will come upon us

Which One Do You Want?

If we want, we can go with what Moses gave, or take what Christ got for us. So which one do you want?

  • The law from Moses, who saw only a glimpse of the glory of God, or
  • The grace through Jesus Christ, who is sitting on the lap of God?

This was written by John the disciple, who was known for leaning on the chest of Christ. He was taken to the third heaven and was shown the whole of heaven. Imagine how much more the Lord will reveal to us about the One who is sitting on His lap.

Therefore, all our blessings will show up at the right time, when we need them.

Walk as a Child of God

If we are a true child of God, we walk in the abundance of Christ. God will bring the right things at the right time.

Walk as a child of God.

Beating away logic and intellect, we are walking in the abundance of Christ.

See by faith.
